Andalusian Arabic Choir

ANDALUSIAN ARABIC CHOIR

The Andalusian Arabic Choir (AAC) is a Hispano-Arab music culture choir established and administered by Oz Choirs and Music Inc..Its foundation membership are choristers from the Sydney French Choir and Sydney Spanish Choir,

In the 9th century, Arabs were the catalysts for world advancement in science, medicine, engineering and architecture. Spanish Arabs set popular poetry to music and sung in the mouashah and zajal styles. The word Andalusia comes from the Arabic name Al-Andalus, a part of Spain and Portugal ruled by Arabs for over 750 years. At the time, the most famous singer, composer and creator of Andalusian mouashah was Zyriab (he was also a scientist). He arrived in Andalusia in 821 AD and enchanted the court of Cordova for years with his wit, music and song. He established the first conservatory of music in Cordova, and his teaching methods are still used today.

Ms Ghada Daher ─ Principal Conductor and vocal coach

Ms Ghada Daher is a highly experienced and qualified musical director and soprano singer. She has performed at various solo concerts and musical events in Sydney. The choir will run Arabic Language courses separately, to improve choristers’ understanding and pronunciation. The choir will also run workshops in vocal technique and music reading.
We will also be organising dinners and social events jointly with

The Sydney Arabic Language Group.

Mr Samir Maarbani, Musical Director of the Andalusian Arabic Orchestra, and some of his musicians support the choir’s rehearsals. Samir will take you back to the Andalusian era’s civilisation, culture and music. As a chorister, you’ll take part in unique concerts where the choir, a dance group and orchestra (playing instruments from the Andalusian era) entertain huge audiences.
