French Music and Dance Company
The French Music and Dance Company (FMDC) is a music and dance training organisation as well as a production and performance company. France has been the cultural centre of Europe since Medieval times. Under the reign of Louis XIV, opera, French ballet, and ballroom and square dancing flourished. Dance then moved out of the court and into music halls where audiences would often participate in the bal-musette and can-can.
FMDC aims to promote these dance styles in a series of workshops. A first in Australia, we hope to bring cultural awareness and enjoyment of the historical and romantic dance styles by helping to create dance groups that can perform at community, mainstream and corporate events, as well as major festivals. We will also be running workshops and dance classes in modern French Zouk and have created a unique ‘Emerging Artists Program’ to provide artists with support and mentorship.
The French Cabaret Extravaganza marked the birth of true French entertainment and music culture in Sydney. It was quickly followed by the French Cabaret & Circus and Paris by Night concert, with more than 100 performers, which sold out two weeks beforehand ─ a testament to the popularity of French music and dance culture in Sydney.
