Live the dream series of concerts by the Andalusian Arabic Choir and Orchestra
The Dream of Andalusia – Songs from medieval
Andalusia and various parts of the Arab world
When: 24th March 2012
Time: 7pm for 7.30pm start
Venue: Tom Mann Theatre, 136 Chalmers St Surry Hills.
In the 9th century, Arabs were the catalysts for world advancement in science, medicine, engineering, architecture, music and poetry.
Spanish Arabs set popular poetry to music and sung in the mouwashah and zajal styles. The word Andalusia comes from the Arabic name Al-Andalus, a part of Spain and Portugal ruled by Arabs for over 750 years.
The most famous singer, composer and creator of Andalusian mouwashah is Ziryab – one of the greatest music teachers of all time. He arrived in Andalusia in 821 AD and enchanted the court of Cordova for years with his wit, music, song and fashion. He established the first conservatory of music in Cordova, and his teaching methods are still used today.
The choir’s conductor Ms Ghada Daher and Musical Director Mr Samir Maarbani will take you back to that era’s music culture.
Live the dream of Andalusia, enjoying a concert that will take you to that golden era of art, creativity and music by our outstanding choir and orchestra in a unique and highly entertaining performance never seen before in Australia.
You will be taken from Andalusia through to North Africa, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Iraq. The repertoire includes songs from mouwashah to traditional, folk and modern Arabic.
